DIY 457's

Best strategy to find an IT job in Australia after getting PR using DIY 457's

@Anirban you are correct outsourcing is a risky and a not desired solution to most IT managers. But decisions on Outsourcing are mainly made at CxO level. Hiring is made at an IT management of divisional management level or lower.

With respect to getting people in on 457s. A lot of comes down to laziness and lack of experience. People think sponsoring someone is hard and expensive. Admittedly the forms are tough the first time (isn't everything with the government) and to use an immigration agent is expensive (circa $3K). However to do it yourself costs circa $500 + medical exam costs and the process is largely replicated each time.

I know a client know hired an excellent team of 30+ people quickly on 457s and cheaply because they could be bothered and put the hard work in. It probably cost the company $30K to hire them insteam of $500,000. And these were very good people as well.

There will be no doubt a higher churn rate than hiring just local people, but the saving offsets the risk I suppose.

The skill is balance and doing what is right at the given time. However most employers have policy and 'do as we have done' rather than being pragmatic on what the current situation needs.

That why recruitment should be a deparmental issue and not a HR issue. Each hire is a project and should be treated as such rather than a procurement style acquisition.

DISCUSSION ON COLD CALLING OFFSHORE

ON cold calling for business development partnerships a discussion on Linked In centered around the following question

What is the best way to approach companies to discuss partnership between companies? Our business is content conversion which is an excellent value added service to data management software, but the business development folks just blow you off. Any suggestions?

Some important reactions to my response posted in the comments below

Careers in Outsourcing

GOOD onshore staff in DEMAND more than ever.

It makes sense for onshore companies to outsource when the potential for gross savings is so spectacular. Figures of up to 50% savings have been cited. These savings are gross but even when add in the "cost of outsourcing" net savings of around10% to 15% are routinely arrived at.

Outsourcing carries with it a clear and definite risk that is not easily definable going in and could lead to endangering the entire business. There are enough horror stories to support that so I don't want to go into that here. What I do want to mention is how the risk is somewhat minimised by having a small but highly effective team onshore to cover it. This has become an accepted cost of doing outsourcing. It makes the savings less exciting but insures against putting the entire business under threat.

It is in this area that good onshore staff are worth their weight in gold.

Could you be the kind of person that a career in outsourcing would best suit?

INDECISION

The COST of INDECISION is NOT visible, perceivable, conceivable WHILE standing in the place that is KEEPING you in INDECISION

We cannot truly know the PRICE UNTIL we take a STEP to move through it so we can EVALUATE looking BACK.

OFTEN the only fear is the chance that we may make an INCorrect Decision.

This fear is valid. OFTEN people just leap then find the ground just fell out from beneath their feet and got hurt. So it makes sense they are now overcautious undecided conflicted confused and living in even greater fear.

Its important to work through this in a systematic, well thought out way with the right tools.

For the onshore team member who is stuck in indecision due to some niggling concerns around being able to cut it... it would start with a FREE consultation where we can cut to the chase with these 18 questions and remove all doubt.
